How to change the automatic transmission fluid in a Honda Accord. The Honda Accord is a popular mid-size car produced since 1976 by the Japanese automaker. Regular maintenance is essential in any vehicle, including the Accord. This includes replacing your transmission fluid every 90,000 miles (144,840 kilometers) or 72 months, whichever comes first. Honda recommends the use of Honda Premium Automatic Transmission Fluid, but Dexron III ATF can also be used temporarily, if necessary.
Drive the Accord for 15 to 20 minutes to bring the car to normal operating temperature. Raise the vehicle with ramps or a floor jack. Support it securely with jack stands.
Place a large drain pan on the ground under the transmission. Find the drain plug on the bottom of the transmission and pry it out with a ratchet.
Let the fluid drain out until it stops. Install the drain plug with a new washer. On 1990 to 2000 Honda Accord, tighten the drain plug to 36 pounds per foot with a torque wrench. On 1984 to 1989 Accords, tighten the plug to 29 pounds per foot.
Refill the transmission with Honda Premium fluid. Alternatively, you can use Dexron III automatic transmission fluid. Measure the amount of fluid draining from the transmission and put the same amount of new fluid into the transmission using a funnel. Be careful not to overfill the transmission, as this can cause damage.
Return the Accord to ground level. Start the engine and let it run for a minute or two. Move the shift lever through all the gears, ending in the “Neutral” position.
Check the automatic transmission fluid level. Add enough fluid to bring the level to 1/8 inch (0.31 centimeters) below the “Add” option at the dipstick mark.
Let the engine run for 15 to 20 minutes to allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Check the fluid level again. It should be within the “Full” range on the dipstick. If it is not, add fluid as necessary. If the fluid level is correct, replace the dipstick and close the hood.
Tips
The intervals at which automatic transmission fluid is changed may vary depending on the model, year, and conditions under which you operate the vehicle.
Warnings
Be careful when draining the transmission fluid, as it is very hot.
