How to Change a Fuel Pump on a 1995 Honda Accord

The 1995 Honda Accord’s fuel pump is responsible for sending fuel from the fuel tank to the engine. Once the key is turned to the on position, the fuel pump receives an electrical signal from the ECU (electronic control unit) and increases pressure to send fuel to the engine. When the fuel pump fails, the engine does not receive the fuel it needs for combustion. Fuel pump can be replaced using a few hand tools.

Disconnect the negative battery cable. Release the fuel from the pressure system by loosening the screw at the end of the fuel injection ramp. Place a rag over the screw to catch the fuel. Tighten the screw once the pressure is released.

Block the front wheels. Raise the rear of the car and place a jack stand on each side. Place a drain pan under the drain screw and remove it.

Remove the fuel filler hose cap on the driver’s side. Loosen the hose grips and slide them toward the back of the hose. Retract them while pushing them toward the fittings.

Locate the jack under the fuel tank and place it touching the tank. Remove the nuts from the fuel tank straps. Disconnect the fuel lines running to the pump.

Remove the bolt-mounted fuel pump. Detach it from the tank. Remove the small fuel line holding the pump to the bracket and electrical connectors.

Install the new fuel pump into the bracket. Replace the fuel hose and electrical connectors. Slide it on and tighten the bolts.

Line up the fuel tank and connect the hoses and electrical connectors. Position it using the jack. Install and tighten the tank straps. Replace filler hose, vent hose and hose cover.

Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle. Insert a long funnel into the fuel tank and replace the fuel. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

Tips

Keep the Class B-C fire extinguisher within reach for safety. The engine will require more time to start once the repair is complete due to the lack of fuel in the lines.

Warnings

Move all flammable items away from the work area. Working under the vehicle can be dangerous. Avoid moving it. Loosen the screw slowly to prevent fuel from splashing out.
