How to change the timing belt on a Daewoo Leganza

Waiting for your vehicle’s timing belt to fail before changing it results in expensive repairs, as there will often be damage to other parts of the engine. If the timing belt on a Daewoo Leganza stretches and breaks, the valves in the engine will reach the pistons and cause engine damage. The manufacturers of the Daewoo Leganza recommend that the timing belt is replaced after every 72,000 km.

Disconnect the negative battery cable and set it aside. Make sure the cable is not in contact with any metal parts of the car. Remove the air intake sensor from the air intake duct and the air intake pipe from the throttle body. Using a Philips screwdriver remove the screws from the air cleaner housing and remove the housing.

Lift the vehicle with the hydraulic lift and jack stands. Use a spanner wrench to remove the front wheels and the front inner front splash guard. Using a wrench, relieve tension on the accessory belt tensioner. Slide the accessory drive belt off the crankshaft pulleys. Select the proper size sockets from your set and remove the crankshaft pulley bolts. Remove the crankshaft pulleys.

Place the floor jack on the oil pan and slide the wooden board onto the jack. Lift the board up until it touches the oil pan, so that the jack lifts the engine. Using the proper jack remove the engine mounting bracket and the power steering bracket from the hose.

Rotate the crankshaft clockwise using a socket connected to the crankshaft center bolt so that the timing marks on the crankshaft sprocket align the notch in the rear belt cover. The crankshaft sprocket marks must also line up with the slots in the valve cover.

Use a wrench to loosen the bolt on the timing belt tensioner. Turn the tensioner clockwise and tighten the tensioner bolt. Pull out the timing belt. Slide the new timing belt over the crankshaft pulleys. Loosen the tensioner bolt and turn the tensioner counterclockwise with a wrench. When the pointer on the tensioner is aligned with the groove in the block tighten the tensioner bolt.

Using a sprocket turn the crankshaft twice in a counterclockwise direction until the timing marks line up as in Step 4. Reassemble the engine parts and lower the vehicle.
