Ford Focus brake pads should be changed every 60,000 to 80,000 miles (96,500 to 128,700 kilometers), depending on how hard and how often the brakes are used. Most versions of the Ford Focus use Teves forks, which are slightly different than those used on many vehicles. The brake pads are located inside the forks themselves rather than the disc mounting bracket.
Removing old brake pads
Jack up the front of the car from the axle stand, then remove the front wheels. Apply the handbrake and loosen the wheel nuts before lifting the car.
Clean the brake assembly with brake cleaner spray. Catch any debris in a drip pan and wait for the brake assembly to dry.
Lift the outer brake pad retaining clip off the fork with a flat-blade screwdriver and pliers. Use the pliers to make sure the clip will not fly off as you pry with the screwdriver.
Remove the brake fork guide bolts, you will probably need an Allen key. Remove the plastic screw caps with the screwdriver before loosening the screws. Then lift the fork out of its bracket. Disconnect the brake hose from its bracket on the strut.
Remove the brake pad from inside the brake fork; it is retained inside the fork piston by a clip built into the retainer. Slide the pad out of the fork, along with the retaining clip.
Installation
Push the fork piston back into the hole with the C-hook. Open the brake cylinder master reservoir to observe the fluid level as the piston is compressed. Check that the fluid does not overflow.
Slide the new brake pad into position inside the fork and push to engage the fork piston clip.
Install and secure the fork in its bracket with the guide bolts and outer pad retaining clip.
Repeat all the above steps to remove the fork and replace the brake pad on the other wheel.
Put the wheels back on and lower the car once the pads have been replaced on both wheels.
Warnings
Avoid braking hard for the first 100 miles (160 kilometers) with the new pads.
