How to refuel a CNG vehicle at home. While a vehicle that runs on compressed natural gas (CNG) may be tempting because of the fuel economy and low pollutants, you have to consider the rather tricky business of refueling it. In the United States (and some other countries), it is possible to refuel at home with your municipal gas line. You’ll need a few additional components to take advantage of that line.
Purchase a home refueling device along with your CNG-powered vehicle. Honda, the first and largest seller of CNG vehicles in the United States, ships a special device to fuel you at home with the connected natural gas line. Dealers rent machines that are installed at your home for a low monthly fee.
Read the instructions on your refueling device carefully. Pumps are equipped with a special seal that may take some time to master. Most home refueling device manufacturers provide training or instructional videos with purchase.
Plug your car into the refueling device. Since your home’s natural gas pressure is slow, you should do this overnight. Some companies have garages with home refueling devices that refuel while you work. It takes about 8 hours to fill the tank completely.
Take the hose off before you leave the car. Your home refueling device should turn off automatically when it finishes filling, but you have to remember to disconnect all hoses to avoid damaging your equipment.
Keep your eyes on the fuel gauge. CNG-powered vehicles travel an average of 200 to 250 miles before needing to be refueled. If you run out of gas while you’re away, the car will have to be towed home or to one of the limited CNG stations.
Make it a habit to fill up your CNG-powered car every night, so you don’t have to visit a fast-fill station on your way to work.
Tips
Check with your city or county before setting up a home refueling station for your CNG vehicle, as it may be illegal or you may need a special permit. Most areas require at least a building permit. Home refueling devices are equipped with safety sensors that stop operation if the hose is not properly connected. This reduces the risk of fires and other accidents. However, always make sure that the hose is properly connected before you start refueling.
