The Ford Focus braking system incorporates engineering derived from the Ford Motor Company, formerly owned by Volvo. This four-wheel disc brake system is composed of lighter materials, allowing the Focus to be more fuel efficient. The drawback arises when you consider the brake pad and rotor life of the brake pads and rotors, which is less than other 2000 model cars in the Ford lineup. If you have basic auto repair skills, you can change the rear brakes on a 2000 Ford Focus in about two hours.
Remove the rear hubcaps with the puller. Loosen the rear lug nuts with the cross wrench, but don’t remove them. Place the chocks on the front wheels to prevent the car from rolling forward.
Raise the rear of the Focus with the floor jack. Place the adjustable struts under the rear frame on both sides and lower the car onto the struts.
Remove all the nuts you loosened earlier and remove the rear wheels by hand.
Place the drip tray underneath the right rear brake device and clean it with brake cleaner to remove the dust from the surface. Brake dust is harmful to your health, so avoid inhaling it by cleaning the brakes with the brake cleaner spray as far away as possible.
Unscrew the right rear brake caliper with the hose set and lift it off the rotor and the brake caliper bracket. Support the brake caliper on the rear suspension so that it does not hang on the brake line. Then unscrew and remove the brake caliper bracket with the tube set.
Pull out the right rear rotor by hand and put the new rotor in its place. Screw the vice back into position using the tube set.
With your hands, remove the old brake pads from the caliper. Wash all brake dust, road dirt and old grease off the brake caliper with the cleaning spray. Then lubricate the caliper pins with the lithium grease.
Retract the caliper piston with the caliper. Then remove it and insert the new brake pads.
Slide the brake caliper into the caliper bracket and over the rotor. Tighten the caliper to the bracket with the tubing kit.
Repeat steps four through nine on the opposite side.
Replace the wheels and nuts by hand. Lower the car off the struts with the floor jack and tighten the rear nuts to 85 ft. lbs. using the torque wrench.
Replace the hubcaps by hand. When you are finished, remove the chocks from the front tires.
